Pattern of the Month #52 – Stealth Samurai
A superb fly for fast water and gin-clear rivers. The trick to making the fly vanish in the clear water, combined with the greyish hackles, produces a camouflaged, living, swimming fly that has proven effective worldwide for many years. We love this fly for Iceland and the Norwegian west coast clear rivers. We believe it's best fished fast across the current, almost invisible and very seductive.

Pattern of the Month #51 - Nasty Rusty Flash Wing
The Nasty Rusty Flash Wing features our favourite colour combination. This copper fly glitters in shades ranging from warm green to deep burgundy red. The broad spectrum gives it a fantastic shine and an appearance that suits any river with some colour. When the early season river starts to clear up, the Nasty Rusty Flash Wing is a great choice. Tied on the super light BTT, it's ideal for a hea...
Pattern of the Month #50 - Green Highlander Nutria Spey
Over the years, Mikael has been at the forefront of innovative tying techniques and materials. In our 50th Pattern of the Month film, he introduces a new and exciting method for creating durable spey hackles using Nutria fibers. Watch as he ties this version of the classic Green Highlander, showcasing a superbly sexy vibrating hackle. This technique revolutionizes the tying of larger spey tubes...
Pattern of the Month #49 - Classic Durham Ranger
This classic fly holds a special place in Mikael's heart as one of his earliest favourites. The beautifully composed body reflects the artistry of the Victorian era. Its unique appearance, featuring a wing of golden pheasant tippet feathers, has been modernised with a tapered, soft swimming hair wing, delicately striped with a marker pen. Simple yet enchanting, this fly exudes a certain magic, ...
Bolstad Opening 2023 - Perseverance Pays Off
Join us on the opening days of one of the most classic rivers of all time - the mighty Vosso. The lower stretch is home to more stories about battles with giant fish than maybe anywhere else; the Bolstad beat. A fish wasn't considered truly big until it tipped the scales at 60 lbs, with 40 and 50 lbs catches being a regular occurrence, and even some enormous salmon exceeding 70 lbs. Though the ...
Pattern of the Month #48 - Akroyd Spey
This is one of Mikael’s absolute favourites among the old classic Spey and Dee flies. Already in the early 80s, he had good catches on both Dee strip-winged versions and this one, with a little cinnamon-colored hair wing tied in flat over the mobile heron-hackled body. This classic fly features humus colours, and perhaps that’s one of the reasons it's been so effective on our Baltic rivers and ...
River Ljungan - Home of the Big Baltic Salmon
Join us on a trip to the majestic Ljungan River, meeting the Baltic sea just south of the small town of Sundsvall; the river is renowned for hosting some of the largest Baltic salmon. While its lower reaches flow wild and untamed, further upstream, the landscape is wrecked by a daunting dam, halting the migration of wild fish. Despite extensive restoration projects, the lower section remains th...
Pattern of the Month #47 - Mikkeli Blue Flash Wing
Flash wings have gained increasing popularity in recent years. Mikael tied his first flash wing for Gaulfossen back in the early 80’s. This new design is elevated by a stiff underwing that effectively holds the flash away from the hook. The innovative SSS Flash blend, combined with the new Glitz Dubbing Brush, makes tying exceptionally easy. To add motion, ostrich hackles are tied in front of t...
Pattern of the Month #46 - Nasty Banana Pig
This little Pig has proven to be a truly effective fly for big fish. Many have watched Mikael & Håkan's unique adventure with the great 55 lbs salmon at Steinfossen that fell for a fly like this. On a sunny day, when the fish are particularly tricky, the Nasty Banana Pig may do the trick. Our new little invention; the FITS Feeler Cones, controlling the feelers' position and ensuring a well-bala...
Pattern of the Month #45 - Classic Jock Scott
The classic of all classics! This masterpiece of John “Jock” Scott is the most famous of all salmon fly patterns. Some say you cannot consider yourself a true salmon angler without catching a salmon on a classic Jock Scott. You find versions of the Jock Scott, or flies heavily inspired by this pattern in the boxes and wallets of almost every single salmon angler. The black and yellow colours ma...
Pattern of the Month #44 - Sunray Samurai
Sunrays have taken more fish than maybe any other modern fly. Originating from Norwegian Laerdal river and Ray Brooks where Mikael used to ghillie, it in many ways changed the fly tradition. This soft swimming version tied on a TTT has the same colours - the great black/white contrast but with the Ostrich hackles forming a modern soft drop form it swims great. When you see the white and black o...
First Time Fishing Suldalslågen
September 2022 - Mikael and buddy Håkan packed the car and went to south west of Norway. They met a big crystal-clear river with late running big fish - Suldalslågen. A great classic river where brits pioneered hundreds of years ago. Today sadly destroyed by the waterpower industry and genetically polluted by the hatchery. Pattern of the Month #43 - Waker Takers
In this film Mikael deals with is “fly tying material from hell” - deer hair! To fish on the surface is exciting and can be done with fat bombers or lightly dressed classic dries. We prefer flies that are possible to skate even in hard wavy waters. This little discrete brown fly is thanks to the combination of deer hair and foam almost impossible to sink. It’s about as close to an insect imitat...
Pattern of the Month #42 - Classic The Bastard
This crossover between two of our most popular flies: Pahtakorva and Nasty Banana has proven to be just as good as expected. A superb pattern both when the river get a bit of colour and when it runs almost totally gin clear. We fish them from big and fat 12-10 cm down to more sparsely tied 4-3 cm. The spey-like ostrich hackle gives this fly that extra sexy swimming look. There are few cross bre...
Pattern of the Month #41 - Icelandic Nano Tubes
The Nano Series was originally made for Iceland’s extremely small fly tradition. We all know that fly size really matters, and these nano sized salmon flies has proven to take salmon even in deeper and a bit coloured water. When temperature rises and fish get very tricky the most effective method is to go down in size. To just change a few mm is seldom the trick - be brave and fish what you thi...

In Michigan we have a green tinted river with lake run salmon and a lot of smallmouth bass. When the salmon aren't in, I fish a 5 weight 2 hander with some of your flies for bass and they are very, very productive. I am a big fan of your work. All the best.

Hej Mikael!

Recently been trying this on my local river with a hitch tube and watching how it moves. With varying currents it becomes more difficult. The fly swings too quickly in the initial stages, where I am trying to target an outside stream. Perhaps a combination of both techniques in a single drift would be better?

The actual name of the hitch is the “Portland Hitch” it was created by the local guides of Portland Creek Newfoundland Canada! Visiting Fisherman from all over the world would come to Portland Creek River to fish the abundance of XLarge Atlantic salmon. They would be using salmon flies with leather loops. If the loop broke, they would toss the flies away and the local guides, who did not have a lot of money or access to flies/materials as that area was extremely isolated, would pick them up and reuse them by half hitching them to their line! I have been fishing Portland creek for over 30 years and met some of the old timers who were the guides back then and they are always happy to tell the stories of how the hitch was born!

@@frodinflies I agree. Just wondering why fish ladders were not put in when the dam was built though. Unlike here in BC Canada the dam shown seems pretty low and a ladder would be sensible. With such a precious resource it would seem obvious to at least construct a ladder.
